Brief Introduction to
Anxi Oolong Tea (Anxi Wulong)

Oolong (also called Wulong) is a traditional Chinese tea (Camellia sinensis) produced through a unique process including withering under the strong sun and oxidation before curling and twisting. For over seven centuries, oolong tea has been enjoyed by tea connoisseurs in China. Myths surround many varieties of these teas. Regional competitions are dedicated to selecting and recognizing the best farmers every season. Most oolong teas, especially those of fine quality, involve unique tea plant cultivars that are exclusively used for particular varieties. The degree of fermentation can range from 8% to 85%, depending on the variety and production style.

In Chinese tea culture, semi-oxidised oolong teas are collectively grouped as Qing Cha (literally as blue-green tea). The taste of oolong ranges hugely amongst various sub-varieties. It may be sweet and fruity with honey aromas, or woody and thick with roasted aromas, or green and fresh with bouquet aromas, all depending on the horticulture and style of production.

Oolong teas offer a complexity of flavor and richness of texture which is wonderfully satisfying. Many people consider oolong tea to offer the most complete tea drinking experience as they combine the freshness of green tea and the complexity of black tea in perfect balance.

Anxi is a famous tea production region for oolong tea, which is located in southern Fujian Province of China. Oolong tea plants are ubiquitous throughout the countryside and grow abundantly in the fertile rocky soil. The harvesting time for Anxi Oolong is in such three seasons as Spring, Summer and Autumn, while tea leaves picked and produced in Autumn are the best to enjoy the most long-lasting fragrance called by locals as Qiu Xiang (literally as “Autumn Fragrance”). After picking the tea it goes through elaborate processing involving withering, tossing, and rolling. Depending on the intention of the producer these teas can also be roasted. There are light, medium, and heavy styles of roasting and all have a market among tea lovers. As a result of modern demands, the teas produced tend to be much less roasted and much more green, floral and sweet.

Major oolong varietals from Anxi include the most well-known Tie Guan Yin, and the lesser known Mao Xie and Ben Shan oolongs as well as Huang Jin Gui and the newly developed Jin Guan Yin. For over 20 years we’ve been working with family farmers who have been growing and making oolong tea for many generations in the Anxi region. Taste from our comprehensive offering of Anxi teas and experience the breadth of flavors from nectar sweet, to toasted nuttiness. These are a treat!
