Brief Introduction to
Yunnan Black Tea (Dian Hong Gong Fu)

Yunnan Black Tea, generally called Dian Hong in China, is originally produced in Feng Qing of China’s Yunnan Province. “Dian” is the abbreviation of Yunnan, where the world-renowned Pu-erh tea is also produced. Yunnan is one of China’s main tea production areas and has thousands of years of history in tea plantation, production and selling. Dian Hong is a relatively “young” black tea from Yunnan that began production in the early 20th century. In 1939, Dian Hong was produced and packaged in bamboo baskets and shipped to Hong Kong, and then re-packaged in aluminum cans for export to UK, Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. From then on, Dianhong has enjoyed high prestige and broad influence both at home and abroad.

Dian Hong is a type of relatively high end gourmet Chinese black tea sometimes used in various tea blends. The main difference between Dianhong and other Chinese black teas is the amount of fine leaf buds, or “golden tips”, present in the dried tea. Dianhong tea produces a brew that is brassy golden orange in colour with a sweet, gentle aroma and no astringency.

Yunnan Black Tea can stand up for several brewings. To those who are unfamiliar with Yunnan Black Tea, we say it is similar in flavor to the tea from Assam region in India. In fact, Yunnan province is located north of Assam region. Many tea experts speculate that this geographic proximity is the reason for Yunnan black tea’s tippy character. Many tea experts and tea lovers think Yunnan Black Tea (Dian Hong) is arguably the most underrated Chinese tea.
