Brief Introduction to
Zhi Lan Xiang (Iris Flower Aroma) Dan Cong Oolong

Zhi Lan Xiang (Iris Flower) Dancong has the relaxing aroma of the iris orchid and a bright yellow tea color when brewed. This oolong tea sustains its rich flavor through multiple infusions and builds a pleasant sweetness at the back of your throat with each sip.

Zhi Lan Xiang Dan Cong Oolong Tea is grown 600 meters above sea level in Chaozhou of China’s Guangdong Province, the birthplace of Dan Cong Wulongs. The name dan cong, meaning “single bush”, refers to the garden practices in this province which involve grafting cuttings of desirable bushes to the cut-down trunks of less successful tea bushes. This unusual style has led to a slew of named tea bush varieties which are known for their unique flavors and aromas. In general, the signature characteristics of this style of wulong tea are its rich, robust flavor and a high floral aroma.

Aroma in particular, is one of the most celebrated aspects of Dan Cong. The teas in this style are described by many Dan Cong experts as having ten distinct types of aromas. Zhi Lan Xiang is the name of just one of these aromas as well as the bush cultivar that is used to produce this particular tea. Zhi Lan Xiang Dan Cong Wulong Tea is alternatively called “Song Zhong Zhi Lan” or “Song variety iris”, because its mother bush is believed to originate in the Song Dynasty. Two very old examples of this cultivar are still living.
