Brief Introduction to
Lu Shan Yun Wu (Cloud and Mist) Green Tea

Lu Shan Yun Wu tea (literally as Cloud and Mist) originates in Lushan Mountain in Jiujiang of China’s Jiangxi Province. Thanks to the humid climate, fertile soil, abundant rainfall, Lushan Mountain is very suitable for tea growing.

Lushan Mountain, known as “The most beautiful scenery in the world”, is located in Jiujiang of Jiangxi Province. 1,543 meters above the sea level, the mountain towers over the southern bank of the Yangtze River, casting its shadows upon the Poyang Lake. Lushan Mountain bristles with lofty peaks in an infinite variety of forms. The ever-changing mist blankets the peaks all the year round, sometimes veiling the peak, sometimes pouring from the summit. The breathtaking scenery and the “Waterfall Clouds” make the mountain more mysterious and give the tea a poetic name “Cloud and Mist” (Yun Wu).

Lushan Yunwu tea is one of the Chinese top ten teas. The tea grown in Lushan Mountain can be traced back to the Jin Dynasty. In the Tang Dynasty, scholars and poets gathered in Lushan Mountain, thus facilitating tea growing there. It is said that the famous poet Bai Juyi once built a cottage and planted tea trees and herbs in the mountain. During the Song dynasty, it became a tribute tea. Lushan Yunwu tea is characterized by fresh tender leaves, a delicate jade green color and luster, lingering fragrance, and refreshingly sweet flavor.

The period of Ching Ming Festival is the best time for picking. The most precious Lushan Yunwu tea is “Ming Qian Tea”, which is made of tea leaves picked prior to the Ching Ming Festival when spring just comes back and the shoots are extremely young and tender. The Tea-picking Folk Rhyme recorded in Lushan Annals describes how “Ming Qian Tea” is made, “The picking is days later than usual. In April when the cold wind is blowing, the tea buds in the mountain are spreading their fragrance…”. The buds collected need to be processed on the same day and go through steps including water removing, shaking, rolling, shaping, baking, etc. It’s really a time consuming work as more than one hundred thousand fresh tea buds can only produce one kilo dry tea leaves!

Lu Shan Yun Wu tea is featured by delicate jade green color and luster, unveiled silver pekoe, lingering fragrance, freshingly sweet savor, as well as long-lasting aftertaste. The leaves contain a high concentration of chlorophyll and nutrients. Its content of alkaloid and Vitamin C is much higher than other common green teas.

With its excellent quality, Lushan Yunwu tea has become more and more popular in China and other countries. As tourism booms in Lushan Mountain, the demand for its tea also flourishes. Whoever comes to Lushan Mountain also wants to buy some tea as gifts for their friends and relatives.

In 1959 when Zhu De (a founder of PRC) tasted the tea in Lushan Mountain, he even wrote a poem praising the strong flavor and life-prolonging benefits of the tea, “The flavor of Lushan Mountain Cloud and Mist tea is dense and intense. It is a macrobiotic and healthy way to drink the tea evermore.”
