Brief Introduction to
Wuyi Rock Oolong
(Wuyi Yan Cha)

Wuyi oolong teas are sometimes called “rock teas” (literally as Yan Cha) because of the distinctive terroir of the mountainsides where they are grown. Tea grown in the rocky, mineral-rich soil is highly prized. Because of the lower yield produced by tea bushes in such terrain, the resulting tea can be quite costly. Tea made from the leaves of older bushes is particularly expensive and limited in quantity. Da Hong Pao, collected from what are said to be the original bushes of its variety, is among the most expensive teas in the world, and more valuable by weight than gold.

According to the current national standard, being bred and planted in the natural ecological environment of Mountains Wuyi, Wuyi rock tea falls into the category of Oolong tea produced with unique traditional processing techniques (shape of tea stripe) with rock charm. As a renowned tea it is under the protection of products of origin by Chinese government.

Wuyi Rock Tea is a general term for the category of Wuyi Oolong tea produced in the north of Fujian province. It belongs to the kind of semi-fermented tea. It is well known for the unique “charm of rock”, a rock aroma which makes you enjoy a rich and mellow taste along with an endless sweet aftertaste. It combines the delicate fragrance of green tea with the mellow taste of black tea. It is regarded as the best category in Oolong tea and it is a representative of China’s top teas.

Wuyi Rock Tea has a long historical standing. It had been of great reputation in Tang Dynasty and was regarded as a royal tribute in Song Dynasty. The “imperial tea garden” was set up in Wuyi Mountain in Yuan Dynasty. Wuyi Rock Tea is of wild variety, including Dahongpao, Tieluohan, Shuijingui, Baijiguan, Rougui, Shuixian, Bantianyao, etc. Among them, Dahongpao, Tieluohan, Shuijingui, Baijiguan are best known as the “Four Famous Firs of Wuyi”.
